Iceland, A Trip to Blue Lagoon

Iceland, A Trip to Blue Lagoon

Booking a flight to London? Upcoming trip to Paris? Consider booking a flight with a longer layover in Iceland. Or, make it a destination and stay a few days. Either way, make sure you add Blue Lagoon to your itinerary. We’d recommend at least 4 hours to make the most of your time. Heading from the airport to the Blue Lagoon, you will marvel in the landscape and all it’s beauty, formed by a volcanic eruption nearly 800 years prior.

Often regarded as one of the wonders of the world, Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa formed in 1976. People started bathing in the lagoon waters and noticed great effects on the skin. Since then, it has been opened to the public and the spa offers silica mud masks and more to ensure you get the most out of your visit. The water is maintained naturally between 37°C and 40°C (98-104°F), but may fluctuate due to natural variables. The water originates a bit further than a mile below the earth’s surface, and collects silica and minerals on it’s way up, creating the phenomena we see at Blue Lagoon.

If on a long layover, the healing waters seem to readjust your body to your new time zone, making this a great first stop on your trip. Don’t miss the steam room carved out of the lava rock poolside. You can confirm an airport transfer via bus charter when making your reservations online. Admission starts at ISK 6990 for the comfort package (around $70 USD), and goes up to ISK 53000 for the luxury package (price for 2, around $550 USD). All packages include entrance to Blue Lagoon, silica mud mask, use of towel, and a complimentary beverage at the swim up bar or cafe. They also offer in-water massages if you are really looking to unwind and relax. There are lockers for your belongings and a wristband to easily track any purchases you make during your visit, paid at the end. The spa is family friendly, kids 2 and up are allowed.

Insiders tip: bring a pair of sunglasses! Especially if visiting on a sunny day, the water reflects the sun and can be quite bright. We’d also suggest applying a layer of sunblock. Even on a cold day, the suns rays are strong and the warm waters will make you forget how long you’ve been outside.
